I’m partial to corny hometown celebrations, and Littleton’s is undoubtedly one of the best around. No measly weekend of face painting, goofy competitions and pancake breakfasts, the ongoing eleven-day Western Welcome Week summer fete is actually all this and more, featuring no end of family fun, from gold panning to swing dances, throughout its run. But my favorite part of WWW is the all-out festival day, when any Littletonian worth his or her salt comes downtown to Main Street for two parades (one specifically for the young ’uns and the other for everyone), the library’s huge used-book sale, art exhibits, sales, live music, an arts-and-crafts fair and an evening dance, among other things.

The festivities kick off this morning at 6:30 a.m. with the Grand Western Sandwich Breakfast at Littleton United Methodist Church, 5894 South Datura Street, and continue into the night. For a complete schedule and map, visit www.westernwelcomeweek.com; for information, call 303-794-4870.

Sat., Aug. 16, 6:30 a.m.-9 p.m., 2008
