The word “crafts” has a negative association with macrame plant-hangers and other kitschy handmade crap, but these days, crafting is enjoying something of a renaissance. The DIY spirit of the punk and indie music scenes has been injected into this once moribund activity, resulting in something new: crafts that are creative and, suddenly, hip. Get a glimpse of the new scene today at the Broadway Open Air Market, in the courtyard of 1 Broadway (next to Spicy Basil). Creative fashion, design, art and, yes, crafts will be for sale from a variety of local artisans. “It’s basically a place for people around Denver who make stuff but don’t have a place to sell it,” explains Kristen Pettit, who runs the market with her partner, Brian Nelson. “It’s modern crafts, young people making cool stuff.”
The market is open today and the last Saturday of every month through October, from 3 to 8 p.m. Admission is free, but you’ll want to bring some cash to purchase all your great finds, from Fancy Tiger’s make-a-button display to the latest from local fashionistas.
