Because music journalist Tom Moon shares my kind of pan-musical taste, his new listening guide, 1,000 Recordings to Hear Before You Die (a companion of sorts to Patricia Schultz’s enormously popular 1,000 Places to See Before You Die), had me hooked from the first page: A well-thought-out crazy quilt of rock, roots, jazz, classical and world-music options, it’s a long, long, smartly annotated list that encourages both experimentation and the sheer joy of listening. As with any book of this kind, you’re going to quibble with his choices at times, but Moon does at least bend over backward to include additional titles outside of the original thousand, stretching his critical web by incorporating suggestions for what to listen to next after every entry.
