El Día de los Muertos will be the theme at both Mezcal (3230 East Colfax Avenue, 303-322-5219) and Tambien (250 Steele Street, 303-333-1763) this weekend, with sugar-skull artwork from the children of William Roberts and Bromwell elementary schools (on display since October 20), plus special food and drink menus.
“It’s important for the children to see the different crafts and celebrations of different cultures,” says Bromwell art teacher Lauren Shellberg. “It’s important to tie crafts and celebrations with actual traditions.”
Stop by and check out the skulls, which go up for sale at Mezcal (Roberts) and Tambien (Bromwell) tomorrow and Monday. Skull prices range from $5 to $20, and all pro-ceeds benefit art programs at the schools.
Along with the artwork, the restaurants will have traditional altars on display, complete with candles, incense and marigolds for remembrance, plus drink specials like El Beso del Diablo (The Devil’s Kiss), a grapefruit mojito and La Bruja Blanca (White Witch) margarita. But know your limits, or you could end up praying to the porcelain god instead.
