If you’ve always wanted to learn the ins and outs of record production, your golden opportunity has arrived. Randall Frazier, chief engineer at helmet r00m recordings, is teaching a class on basic audio production at the Colorado Free University. The three-session class will cover the basics of audio theory, microphone use, computer recording, MIDI technology and the fundamentals of mixing and production, split into one theory class and two sessions of hands-on practice.

As a self-taught studio rat myself, I can say I wish like hell I’d had
someone to teach me the basics instead of having to figure out
everything the hard way. This is a great opportunity for bands looking
to self-record, not to mention anyone who’s considering a career in
audio production and wants to get their feet wet before signing up for
a full-fledged program somewhere. Hell, I’d even recommend it to
hard-core music fans who want to get the inside dope on how it’s done.
I feel that learning about how music is put together has allowed me to
appreciate and enjoy a far wider variety of musical styles than I would
have dreamed possible before I started recording. The class is $96 for non-members of CFU ($84 for members), plus a $20 materials fee. For more info or to sign up, visit the helmet room blog.
