Bleary eyed and endlessly fatigued, we caught up with the always gracious Matt Morris at the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport on Sunday morning just before boarding a plane back to the Mile High City. Over breakfast tacos, Morris reflected on his very first South By Southwest experience, from the challenges of competing with the ambient liquor fueled bar noise of a 10 p.m. pub show to the stunning contrast of performing within the sacred confines of the Central Presbyterian Church, which Morris said, fittingly enough, was very spiritual.
Although the church is used as another SXSW venue, it’s still a church. And as such, Morris reports, he and his band were reminded by staffers of this fact and issued a rather stern warning against uttering any profanities. They were also advised that the only beverage allowed on stage during their set was bottled water. With a cap. Not a tall order for Morris and company, who hardly seem like the belligerent sort. The burgeoning pop sensation discusses the experience above, as well as finally selling out the Bluebird.
