One of the many highlights of the sixth annual Rize urban art and music festival on Saturday, April 25, at the Paladium (1400 West 62nd Avenue), is a live laptop remix set of whiplash future breaks by Überzone. This California native, known as Timothy Wiles to his mother and Q to his friends, has been producing dark, gnarly breakbeat tracks since the mid-’90s, releasing a number of well-regarded efforts such as “Botz” and “The Freaks.” Drawing on the electro, hardcore and funky schools of breakbeat science, he makes tracks full of cleverly programmed breaks and unique synthesizer timbres and employs an intelligent use of dynamics. The results are dance-floor-friendly sci-fi soundtracks that go down smooth in almost any set.
