When the words “Cinco de Mayo” fall on your ears, you might reflexively start salivating for a beer that ends in a vowel. And while I don’t blame anyone for wanting a cold one, there’s also apparently a rich cultural heritage attached to the holiday. Cue the 2009 Cinco de Mayo Celebrate Culture festival at Civic Center Park, which is being presented by NEWSED and the Santa Fe Redevelopment Corporation.
The fest takes place today and tomorrow from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and I’d suggest eating nowhere else this weekend, because there will 350 exhibitors and vendors handing out that so-hard-to-pin-down Colorado Mexican cuisine (check out www.cincodemayodenver.com for a list). One of the can’t-miss events has got to be the second annual Green Chili Bowl Cook Off, which showcases a dish that is near and dear to the hearts of most Coloradans. Fifteen restaurants will compete for first place and a $500 prize, but also for the People’s Choice Awards, which involves $100 and bragging rights. The people can also choose from the many entertainment options, headlined by the Paris Escovedo Project, which is visiting Colorado for the first time.
