One, two, three ROCK. Unless you had paper, this round belongs to me. At least, it would if we were facing off in tonight’s Bands for Lands RPS Tournament. At long last, the ancient sport of Rock Paper Scissors has its own full-fledged monthly tournament here in Denver, sanctioned by the USARPS League (and yes, that is a real thing). “You see these kickball leagues and dodgeball leagues, and I was surprised that no one had brought this to Denver,” explains organizer Jeremy Gregory. “I thought, ‘What a neat idea to bring people together to win some money and support a good cause.’”
Up to 64 competitors will square off; the top three finishers get cash prizes. But if your skills aren’t up to snuff or your wrist is just really sore, you can sit on the sidelines and cheer on your favorite competitor while enjoying the sounds of Voodoo Stingray & Speedshift 4000. Costumes are encouraged — the sillier the better.
Tournament check-in starts at 7 p.m. at 3 Kings Tavern, 60 South Broadway. Tickets are $5 for spectators, $10 for participants (the entry fee includes a drink), and a portion of the proceeds goes to Bands for Lands, a nonprofit dedicated to sustainability, conservation and social awareness.
