Tonight’s Artsy-Fartsy Chili Cook-off promises to be a gas for anyone who blows through The Other Side Arts (TOSA), the local nonprofit based at 1644 Platte Street that’s hosting its second annual chili competition to benefit the group’s arts programs. “One of our former staff members came up with the name and we ran with it, because it really encompasses who we are: an artsy-fartsy place that’s open to everyone and doesn’t take itself too seriously,” explains Crissy Robinette, TOSA’s outreach and education director. The cook-off pits sixteen competitors against one another in three chili categories — red, green and vegetarian; attendees, who can sample the stews, are asked to vote for their favorites. “If there’s anything I’ve learned,” says Robinette, “it’s that people take a lot of pride in their chili.”
The fundraiser, which kicks off at 5 p.m., will also include live music from American folk band Fire in the Wheel, plenty of beer, kids’ activities and gallery displays, including a wall of potato art. “We definitely want to encourage everyone to check out the art, which represents a wide variety of populations,” says Robinette.
