Celebrating the life and legacy of J Dilla, the super producer from Detroit, has become a yearly occurrence since his passing from Lupus in 2007. Started by New York DJ Dee Phunk, the Donuts are Forever parties have been going strong for the past five years. Recent Denver transplant, audio engineer Neon Brown has attended those parties for years, and this year he’s partnered with Beauty Bar for a Tribute to J. Dilla.
J. Dilla and hip-hop are almost synonymous. A member of Slum Village and one of the most celebrated hip-hop producers of all time, Dilla revealed he was suffering from Lupus disease after he performed in Europe from a wheelchair back in 2007. The production master died three days after the release of his Stones Throw Records album, Donuts. Since his death, there has been a cult-like devotion to his massive influence in hip-hop and his presence in the beat-making community.
The tribute party going down at Beauty Bar tomorrow night will feature the sounds of DJs Zak Harper, Red-C and Neon Brown. There is a suggested donation of $5 at the door, and all proceeds will go to the Lupus Foundation of Colorado.
