DJs Kitchy Ami and Matt Black are avid skaters who have “a ton of glittery, fun dance music that we didn’t really have anyplace to play.” So the duo created Glamazon, a ’70s- and ’80s-style roller-disco dance night at La Rumba that takes place tonight and the first Sunday of every month.
“Mixing the two just seemed like perfect harmony,” says Ami, adding that wheels are encouraged but not required. “Roller skating used to be such a huge part of nightlife and has somehow fallen to the wayside. Of course, we always welcome our standard dancers as well.”
On other Sundays, Ami and Black, known as the Blondes, host a Glamazon night with a mix of disco, electro-clash or nu wave, but the first Sunday of the month is reserved for pure roller-rink disco. “Do you know anything else that you can make letters in the air with your arms and not be called crazy? Or shake you butt like no one is watching? We really wanted to do something that was pure glitter bliss,” Ami says.
So bring your glitter, your skates and $5 bucks (free before 10 p.m.) to bliss out, boogie and roll the night away at La Rumba, 99 West Ninth Avenue. Check www.facebook.com/glamazon.denver for more information.
