Welcome to summer in Colorado! ‘Tis the season to kick back, soak up some rays, listen to music in your local park, shoot some rapids, take a walk for a good cause, ride your bike a hundred miles into the mountains, spend a weekend surrounded by art, history or wine — or whatever else strikes your fancy. Because one thing is certain: If you want to do it, Colorado will be throwing an event for it, somewhere, sometime, somehow this summer.

Just take a look at what’s going on in our fair state! Nationally known musicians are spending weeks at a time in the high country, playing festival after fair after showcase, sometimes for free. Whole towns are getting together to put on parades and fireworks shows. Cowboys are hip deep into the rodeo circuit. Movie buffs are pulling up lawn chairs and settling back to watch films under the stars. And you’re invited to be part of it all.

Westword‘s Summer Guide is here to help. We’ve arranged our listings by day so that you can see exactly what’s available on a specific date. Now, we can’t guarantee that some of the more popular events won’t be sold out by the time you get around to thinking about ordering tickets, but with so much going on, you’ll probably find something else that’s just as much fun.

To jump-start your summer-vacation planning, we’ve profiled ten of the state’s more noteworthy festivities, from the Film on the Rocks series at Red Rocks, the fabulous facility that celebrates its sixtieth anniversary this summer, to wine-tasting on the Western Slope. These events — which stretch from June to September, from border to border, from the peaks to the prairie — should give you quite a taste for the diverse activities you’ll find in the state.

Take some time to discover, or rediscover, Colorado this summer. Wherever your travels take you, you won’t be disappointed.
