Dreaming of paddling Patagonia’s Rio Futaleufu on an upcoming adventure? Lyle Phetteplace, co-owner of Renaissance Adventure Guides, suggests starting your journey a little closer to home — like Clear Creek’s Whitewater Park in Golden. That’s where you’ll find Renaissance on the River 2010, a free kayaking workshop, tonight and every Wednesday this summer from 5:30 to 8 p.m. It’s a casual playboating night for newbies and experienced paddlers alike, with free tips and tutorial from the pros. Bring your own boat or rent gear for $10, and stick around for the free BBQ.
“Colorado is unique, for sure: You could travel the whole world looking for what we have right here,” says Phetteplace. “The Wednesday workshops started as a way to help our clients prep for the bigger trips, and it’s just mushroomed out into its own thing where we have little bitty kids, teens, families, all kinds of people learning how to go down the river and getting a snapshot of what it’s like to be in control of your own vessel, to be kayaking.”
