Immerse yourself in the art and culture of hip-hop today at the Urban Culture Collective, a free event in Skyline Park. Music, graffiti, fashion and dance performances and competitions are all on the agenda. And while old-school heads will feel right at home, it’s a great opportunity for the curious novice to get his feet wet. “We’re really excited to bring this to a level where kids can participate in something they love, but in the public eye,” says Scott Aller, one of the promoters. “And to bring some enlightenment that this urban culture isn’t vandalism or juvenile, that it’s a legitimate art form.”
The centerpiece will be the annual Mighty 4 Breakdance Competition, Colorado’s biggest breakdance contest. Dancers will square off alone and in teams in various categories, including a twelve-and-under division. Notable local and national artists and personalities will be on hand, including Trac 2, Signtologist, Aby, DJ Chonz, DJ Vajra, Dj Ricky O, Paulskeee, Spoke in Wordz and Dent.
The free party gets started at 11 a.m. in Skyline Park, 16th and Arapahoe streets. Dancers can register for $10 in advance or $15 the day of the event (the twelve-and-unders are free). For more information, or to register for the competition, visit www.5280live.net/ucc.
