Denver’s a great place for fans of the big five of genre film (that’s sci-fi, fantasy, horror, exploitation and cult), as every week we get a generous helping of selections to choose from. As usual, we’re rounding up your options for the weekend to come and the following week, and making a recommendation of one can’t-miss film. This week, we get one of the creepiest kid vampires of all time.
Pick of the Week: Let the Right One In
Where: Starz FilmCenter, Tivoli building on the Auraria Campus
When: 10 p.m. Friday, September 24, and Saturday, September 25
Why?: Let the Right One In is a dark, thoughtful story of a pre-teen boy, the bullies that plague him and a little vampire girl that only wants to help him. A different kind of vampire film, this one will leave you thinking about it for days afterward. It’s Swedish, so you might have to read a little, but it sure beats watching the sure-to-be-inferior US remake.

Pee Wee’s Big Adventure
Where: Esquire Theatre, 600 Downing Street
When: Midnight Friday, September 24, Saturday, September 25
Why?: Before Tim Burton was a household name, he directed Pee Wee’s Big Adventure, the story of a boy who loves his bike and faces great peril to get it back. It’s a whimsical, engaging film that’s probably the best story Burton’s ever told, and it looks amazing on the big screen.
