Robert Dubac got tired of dicks. The actor, standup comedian and star of Free Range Thinking used to be in television, “but I gave it up, because we all know television is pretty homogenized,” he says. “That’s kind of why I wrote these shows — because people just get tired of guys grabbing their dicks and telling dick jokes.”
Actually, Dubac isn’t just the star of Free Range Thinking; he’s the only person in the show. The one-man social satire follows Dubac’s travails as an array of characters, but most centrally as a guy who loses his memory and must figure out what to believe amid a barrage of cultural misinformation and hypocrisy, coming from everything from the media to the church. “It’s reality versus reality TV,” he explains, “crab and imitation crab. We’re being fed a pile of American bullshit, and nobody knows what to believe anymore. So the show kind of deconstructs the propaganda and illusion we’ve been force-fed.”
If that all sounds pretty weighty, Dubac also wants you to know that the show is “funny as hell.” And if that’s not enough to get you in the door, he says, “Tell them I’ll buy ’em a free beer.”
Whether or not free beers will be available when Free Range Thinking opens at 8 p.m. tonight has not yet been determined; to find out, you’ll have to show up at the Garner Galleria Theatre in the Denver Performing Arts Complex. The show runs through November 14; to purchase tickets (they start at $33) or for more information, call 303-893-4100 or go to www.denvercenter.org.
Thursdays-Saturdays, 8 p.m.; Saturdays, Sundays, 2 p.m. Starts: Oct. 21. Continues through Nov. 14, 2010
Will you step up to support Westword this year?
At Westword, we’re small and scrappy — and we make the most of every dollar from our supporters. Right now, we’re $20,000 away from reaching our December 31 goal of $50,000. If you’ve ever learned something new, stayed informed, or felt more connected because of Westword, now’s the time to give back.
