You may not have heard of Pancake Boy or Captain Starfish yet, but if the kids from the Art Students League of Denver have any say in the matter, you will soon. That’s because superheroes of all shapes and sizes will be on display in the fifth annual Dendiggityopolis Superhero Drawing and Writing Contest, showcasing art and original stories by students ranging from kindergartners to high school seniors.
While every submission will be on display, Buntport Theater characters Captain Art, Darla Do-Write and the Crimefighting Crusaders will host an awards ceremony picking the best of the bunch; the theater group stages a superhero series called tRUNks.
“A jury of writers, actors and artists select the best art and writing, but we also have a creativity award for a truly awesome idea that maybe doesn’t have the best artwork or writing with it,” says league spokeswoman Cindy Sewell. The theater group also plans to turn many of these pieces into real-life superheroes on January 8.
The exhibit opens tonight at 5:30 p.m. and runs through December 18 at the Art Students League of Denver, 200 Grant Street; ad-mission is free. For more information, visit www.asld.org or call 303-778-6990.
