Tom Selleck, Rollie Fingers, William Howard Taft: just a few of the brave and celebrated men — nay, heroes — who have bestowed upon the world the gift of their lustrous mustaches. But the mustache wasn’t always so admired. Having long suffered an unfortunate association with sexual deviance, the manliest of facial adornments has in recent years enjoyed a return to the light of its true legacy, a legacy to be commemorated tonight at the seventh annual Mustache Festival at Vesta Dipping Grill.
The festival grew, so to speak, out of a contest started informally by a former Vesta server, says Vesta chef Matt Selby, upon whom it has fallen to carry on that proud tradition; over the years it came to include servers and patrons alike, bound together by brotherhood, lip locks and fabulous prizes, like a framed portrait of Burt Reynolds. But just as mere stubble eventually transforms into glistening curls on an upper lip, the festival was destined to become more. “As of last year, we’ve harnessed the power of the Mustache Festival and turned it into a charitable cause,” Selby proclaims. This year, 10 percent of Vesta’s sales for the night will go to the Make-A-Wish Foundation — a fitting cause, as it’s a scientific fact that a finely groomed mustache can actually grant wishes.
There’s no cover, and Vesta will provide faux mustaches for those who sadly lack them. The revelries begin at 5 p.m. at Vesta, 1822 Blake Street, and continue well into the evening; reservations are encouraged. For more information, call 303-296-1970 or visit www.vestagrill.com.
