Ask Matt Doubek what he and fellow artist Sam Mobley have cooked up for Every Good Cowboy, their new show at Pirate: Contemporary Art, and he’ll tell you, “Barbecue!” Indeed, at tonight’s opening reception, there will be scorched meat, as well as a compendium of Western art-inspired works by the dynamic duo, who in the past have put on such themed exhibitions as last year’s Carnival of Fictional Amusement, which featured a working Ferris wheel adorned with toys and little sculptures. Clearly, Doubek and Mobley will treat the West with a twist of humor and even whimsicality. “We’ll be doing a contemporary take on Western art, using it as an influence: We’ll have cowboy portraits, we’ll be putting saddles on things, antlers on rabbits, rattlesnakes…” Doubek adds that he’s always been drawn to the works of Frederick Remington and notes that he and Mobley visited the fine-art collection at Boulder’s Leanin’ Tree Museum of Western Art to get in the Wild West mood.
