vocalist Andy Tanner puts emphasis on expression over angst, a quality that just might endear this band to listeners wary of punk’s bratty edge. In fact, there’s plenty to set this Colorado Springs four-piece apart from the pop-punk pack. Fond of roving melodies and vocal harmonies, the band pulls elements from both heavy metal and psychedelic-era rock on its debut full-length, Since Last December. Intense but not overbearing, Laymen’s music recalls heroes like Fugazi and Jawbreaker without aping them. (Sometimes the sound is even — dare we say it? — pretty.) Since Last December sees release in a Soda Jerk showcase on Tuesday, May 7, at Tulagi in Boulder.
