A little over six months ago, in late April, the celebrated scientist Stephen Hawking made some, well, some kind of weird comments about sending messages out to possible extraterrestrial life in space: “If aliens ever visit us, I think the outcome would be much as when Christopher Columbus first landed in America, which didn’t turn out very well for the Native Americans,” he remarked, making his case that any intelligent life we might reach would be likely to be malevolent; thus, reaching out to that life is a bad plan.

Apparently, that was enough to set somebody making a movie about it quick.

For real, though: six months? That has got to be record time on getting a movie through production and into theaters — which pretty much guarantees it’s going to be crappy. And the indications it will be are strong: For example, anyone notice there’s no acting in this trailer? We’re guessing there’s an excellent reason for that. There is, however, some badass CGI. Or at least as badass as the CGI from Independence Day, which came out about, oh, about 14 years ago now.

Will you step up to support Westword this year?

At Westword, we’re small and scrappy — and we make the most of every dollar from our supporters. Right now, we’re $20,000 away from reaching our December 31 goal of $50,000. If you’ve ever learned something new, stayed informed, or felt more connected because of Westword, now’s the time to give back.

$50,000

Ah, well. If nothing else, maybe somebody will remix this into a sweet techno video.
