Winter Park kicks off its 70th Anniversary season when it opens its lifts tomorrow at 9 a.m., staking its claim as the longest continually running ski resort in Colorado (Ski Monarch, open November 25, is also claiming platinum anniversary status this year). Winter Park, formerly known as West Portal, opened with its first J-bar tow — lift tickets, $1 — in December, 1939, according to ColoradoSkiHistory.com
To celebrate its platinum anniversary, WP is offering free skiing packages with lodging from now through Christmas at PlayWinterPark.com and $70 per room, per night deals through November 23. For old times’ sake, take the Ski Train and party like it’s 1939: As my colleague Eric Peterson reported yesterday, it’s back in business this season as the Rio Grande Scenic Ski Train.
