Supporting the arts is just good business. That’s the basic message of the Colorado Business Committee for the Arts, which was founded in 1985 and has grown to over 130 members, just announced the finalists for the 25th annual CBCA Business for the Arts Awards. And not only does this award come with plenty of kudos from the business community (we know, because Westword won a few years ago for its ongoing support of the arts, including the MasterMind Awards program), but this time it comes with an extremely cool prize: a set of prints created by Theresa Haberkorn, Mark Lunning, Jim Milmoe and Tony Ortega as part of CBCA’s PrintFolio project, an initiative of CBCA’s Leadership Arts Alumni Network.
The winners will be announced at a luncheon Tuesday, March 6 at the Seawell Grand Ballroom in the the Denver Performing Arts Complex. Find more details on that event at www.cbca.org. Here’s the rundown on the dozen finalists in four divisions:
Impact Award
highlights innovative use of the arts to propel business strategies and successAspen Skiing Company: for partnering contemporary art with skiing, both on and off the slopes
Children’s Hospital Colorado, Phipps/McCarthy, JV and UMB Bank: for the collaborative Many Hands Create Art community mural art project
Toolbox Creative: for their inspirational, creative and philanthropic contributions to the artistic community in Fort Collins
John Madden, Jr. Leadership Award
recognizes a business sector individual who has made significant contributions to advancing arts and culture in ColoradoWilbur Flachman: for his engagement with the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District, personal and business generosity to the cultural community and service to the arts in Westminster and Adams County
Frederic C. Hamilton: for his philanthropy, leadership, vision and entrepreneurship on behalf of the Denver Art Museum
Sacha Millstone: for her service to the arts community, business financial support and dedication to the advancement of the arts in Boulder
Philanthropy Award
honors exemplary corporate citizenship and generosity to arts and cultural projects and organizationsGuiry’s: for their financial and in-kind donations to nonprofit and school arts programs
Park Meadows Retail Resort: for their support of the Lone Tree Arts Center and the arts in Douglas County
The Westin Denver Downtown: for their arts and cultural sponsorships of nonprofits that perform, produce or exhibit in Denver
Workspace Award
pays tribute to an exceptional work environment that advances business objectivesBattery621: for the transformation of a former warehouse into a shared creative space and events venue
Boulder Digital Arts: for the unique co-working space specifically designed for digital professionals
tres birds workshop: for connecting art and utility as reflected in the design of 3i microscope manufacturing company
The judges for the 2012 Business for the Arts Awards are Tami Door, president and chief executive officer, Downtown Denver Partnership; Mark Falcone, chief executive officer and founder, Continuum Partners; Dan Howard, dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, University of Colorado Denver; Richard Scharf, president and chief executive officer, Visit Denver.
