To celebrate its thirtieth year of helping cats in Colorado, the Cat Care Society is searching for homes for a different kind of feline: painted, fiberglass ones. The nonprofit will auction off decorative kitties designed by local artists at its Tails of the Painted Cats gala tonight; examples include a floral-patterned piece named Georgia O’Kitty and a golden Egyptian-themed one called Tutan-KHAT-mun.
Proceeds will help fund programs like Perpet-U-Care, which offers incentives for people to adopt cats that are ten years or older by contributing $250 per year to their medical expenses, and Temporary Care, which offers temporary free room and board for cats whose owners have lost their jobs. The society is a cage-free shelter that never euthanizes animals for space, explains development director Suellen Scott. “We have cats that have lived with us for three years until we find the perfect adopter for them. I know the names of every cat in that building.”
KOA’s April Zesbaugh will emcee the event, and radio personality Don Martin will host the live auction for the five most popular cats. The other twelve will go in a silent auction, and Georgia O’Kitty will be given to the winner of a raffle. “These cats are waiting to be adopted to their forever homes, just like our live kitties,” adds Scott.
