Based in Atlanta, Georgia, the Coathangers didn’t set out to be torchbearers for any movement — unless mixing some sassy attitude with a healthy sense of humor counts. In tried-and-true garage-rock and punk fashion, most of the members of this group were unseasoned when they formed the Coathangers, but after a road trip to SXSW with Black Lips, the outfit quickly jelled into a real band. Most people wouldn’t be up to that challenge, but this foursome took that opportunity and evolved into not just a vehicle for inspired crass humor, but also the kind of group that could write an album like Larceny & Old Lace, which boasts jagged rhythms and a dub-inflected intensity that recalls Delta 5.
