It’s not too often that you come across a play that is also a thriller, but the Curious Theatre‘s world premier of Astronomical Sunset, by Robert Lewis Vaughan, is just that: According to Curious’ playwright-in-residence Meridith Friedman, it’ll make you “jump in your seat — and that’s really hard to do in theater.”
It’s fitting, then, that Curious is adding to the intrigue with a couple of sneak peeks of the play, which doesn’t officially open until next Saturday, this weekend. Ladies and gentlemen, don your sleuth hats.
“We’re calling it a sneak peek because it might change a little before the premier,” Friedman says, explaining that it’s sort of a practice run; the whole production may yet get some finishing touches. But that doesn’t mean it’s not the real deal. What you will see is the meat of the play, which is the story of a couple estranged in the wake of a social media scandal, who go to a small town to try to recover and meet a couple of characters that Friedman says “may not be what they seem.
“Your expectations are constantly challenged,” she warns.
Will you step up to support Westword this year?
At Westword, we’re small and scrappy — and we make the most of every dollar from our supporters. Right now, we’re $20,000 away from reaching our December 31 goal of $50,000. If you’ve ever learned something new, stayed informed, or felt more connected because of Westword, now’s the time to give back.
Luckily, you can get a leg up on everyone else’s challenged expectations tonight and tomorrow night at 8 p.m. at the Curious Theatre (1080 Acoma Street), while simultaneously paying less than everybody else to do it: tickets, which you can get at the door or purchase here, are just $10. And what’s more thrilling than saving money?
