Besides having a kick-ass name, Ace Atkins has a lot going for him as the guy bequeathed with the late Robert B. Parker’s Spenser series. A former crime reporter (and Pulitzer nominee) and established true-crime author and novelist, Atkins was anointed Parker’s successor by Mrs. Parker herself, not only because his Edgar Award-nominated writing was well-matched, but because her husband’s nickname for years was “Ace.” Nice coincidence for Atkins. No matter: Spenser lives on in Robert B. Parker’s Lullaby, the first entry in what we can only hope will be a continuing Spenser saga in the wake of Parker’s death. It helps that Atkins started reading Parker’s books in high school, remaining a fan to the bitter end. In Lullaby (Penguin, $26.95), the beloved detective and sidekick Hawk help a street-smart South Boston teen straighten out the facts of her mother’s murder.
How does that sound to you, Spenser fans? Atkins will discuss and sign copies of the book tonight at 7:30 p.m. at the Tattered Cover Book Store, 2426 East Colfax Avenue. For information, visit www.tatteredcover.com or call 303-322-7727.
