Self-proclaimed diva DJ Irene believes that “people come out to dance to forget the life dramas that wear on their souls, or to be a little more glamorous than they are during the day.” And few DJs know drama better than she does. An openly gay mother of a son in his twenties, Irene is candid about her past, including the days when chemical addictions led to her living on the streets. Now spinning a new life for the sake of her boy, Irene’s become a smiling success and a Billboard regular — both on the magazine’s charts and as a frequent reporter. With a lucky thirteen releases and a recording-engineer degree under her belt, this hard-house heroine has proved herself truly fearless. Her blistering sets are sometimes spun under a searing sun, such as at the Coachella Music Festival in the California desert; others take place in the darkness of tightly packed clubs and warehouses. Either way, the audience ends up scorched. See if you can handle the heat when DJ Irene detonates the decks at Club Dream this Friday, March 5.
