Bobby Hecksher has been the central figure of this band since its founding, in 1999. In 1994 Hecksher played bass on Beck’s Stereopathetic Soulmanure, and he also contributed to the Brian Jonestown Massacre’s 2001 album, Bravery, Repetition and Noise. But in his own work with the Warlocks, he’s explored a wide range of atmospheric sound, with roots in gritty, psychedelic rock. Despite a clear nod to the effects of drug use, 2002’s Phoenix was a kind of fiery tribute to its twin influences, the Velvet Underground and Spacemen 3. By the time the Warlocks released 2007’s Heavy Deavy Skull Lover, their fuzzy atmospherics and spiraling song dynamics had evolved in a darker and more sonically vibrant direction. The latest work from Hecksher and company reveals a melding of its thrillingly claustrophobic sound with a hypnotic melancholia.
