What’s an unconference? Basically, it’s by the people and for the people, a model that works just fine for this weekend’s SpaceUp Denver, which brings together regular folks with a shared interest in the mysteries of outer space during World Space Week. “SpaceUp is a template for a conference used all over the world, but this is the first time it’s being done in Denver,” explains spokesman Adam Brinck-erhoff. “The idea is that it’s supposed to be informal and interactive and really get people involved.” Unlike formal scientific aerospace conferences where dry papers are presented, SpaceUp aims to involve participants at a grassroots level, with few of the formalities: Aside from a couple of planned keynotes and Pecha Kucha-style five-minute T-5 presentations, many sessions will be made up on the spot, according to the whim of people attending (contingency plans will be available, if needed).

Hosted by the local nonprofit space agency SpaceUnited, the unconference unofficially blasts off tonight at 8 p.m. with a space-themed costume party at Fadó Irish Pub, 1735 19th Street in LoDo. Then tomorrow from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., all interested parties are invited to converge on the Auraria campus for meaningful discussions and a few surprises. “The conference is going to be a great place to share your ideas, learn and geek out,” notes SpaceUnited founder Troy Dunn.

The costume party, which includes prizes, is free; $5 gets you into the unconference, and there’s a $2 option for online-only participation. For more information, go to spaceupdenver.org or the SpaceUp Facebook page.
