The first thing you notice about Broken Shovels Farm is its human touch: The tiny Adams County goat farm is family-run, and the goats and chickens and dogs wandering through its pens are clearly more than livestock — they’re part of the family, too. A champion of everything natural, hands-on and small-batch, Broken Shovels goat farmer and cheesemaker Andrea Martin believes in doing things with a little love and a big sense of individuality. During the summer, she hosts a weekly tour and market at the farm, inviting the public to hobnob with the animals and taste and buy her creative cheeses and yogurts; although that season is now past, Martin will reopen Broken Shovels today from 1 to 3 p.m. for a special Broken Shovels Farm Thanksgiving Market.

“We’ll have a hot fire with lots of goodies to sample,” Martin says. “We have vendors offering organic turkeys, pre-made desserts and organic sides, truffles and jams, too.” And of course there’ll be plenty of those glorious cheeses — from kheer-flavored yogurt and Ethiopian spiced logs to artisan Camembert rounds and cognac Banons wrapped in grape leaves. And if you like what you find here, stay tuned for the farm’s Christmas Market in December.

Broken Shovels is a short drive from downtown Denver at 8640 Dahlia Street in Henderson. Visit facebook.com/brokenshovels for information, updates…and lots of cute pics of frolicking baby goats.
