There’s a reason that Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol has never gone out of print. “It was published in 1843, and it’s interesting how the issues in the play, even the point of view that Scrooge has, can feel so remarkably present-day,” says Bruce K. Sevy, who is directing the Denver Center Theatre Company’s holiday production of the timeless classic.

Relating the tale of the supernatural redemption of the “Bah, humbug”-sneering miser Ebenezer Scrooge, the DCTC’s musical adaptation is a consistently heartwarming affair full of grand production values, rich costumes and holiday cheer that carries a message of eschewing greed for kindness and giving. “Even though it’s a joyous play, it’s not afraid to delve into social issues,” explains Sevy. “I think people will be moved.”

A Christmas Carol opens today and runs through December 29 at the Stage Theatre in the Denver Performing Arts Complex. Tickets, starting at $43, are available at 303-893-4100 or denvercenter.org.
Fridays, Saturdays, 7:30 p.m.; Saturdays, Sundays, 7:30 p.m.; Tuesdays-Thursdays, Sundays, 6:30 p.m.; Tue., Dec. 24, 1:30 p.m. Starts: Nov. 29. Continues through Dec. 29, 2013
