As a guitarist, Tom Carleno has spent more than two decades performing with various projects in Colorado, including the acoustic jazz ensemble Perpetual Motion (which also features his wife, violinist Josie Quick). Perfect Imperfection is his first solo effort. Throughout the disc, Carleno, who is a brilliant fingerstyle guitarist, displays a thoughtfulness and evenness in his picking and phrasing. In addition to some fine originals, there’s an intriguing arrangement of the Split Enz song “Working Up an Appetite” that includes harmonics and percussive taps on the body of the guitar, along with a gorgeous rendering of John Lennon’s “Imagine.” Fans of Laurence Juber will most likely dig Perfect Imperfection, and guitar geeks will appreciate the fact that Carleno has included the tunings he used in the liner notes.
