As guitarist and pedal-steel player for 4H Royalty, Jamie Mitchell undoubtedly knows his way around the alt-country. That fact is also in evidence early on his seven-song disc Love Songs of the Profane, which kicks off with “Hotel Room” and is similar to A.M.-era Wilco. Mitchell injects twangy guitar into the up-tempo rocker “California Moonlight,” while the slow build on “Indiana” is pretty damn epic. And though the first half of the disc is rooted in alt-country, Mitchell throws us for a loop on the Sonic Youth-like “Demi-Gods,” in which his reverb-heavy vocals recall Thurston Moore’s. It’s one of the best cuts on the disc. Mitchell is clearly a skilled guitarist, but Love Songs of the Profane shows that he’s an equally capable singer and songwriter.
