Gender inequality plagues the theater world, and “women are fully misrepresented as far as getting our work up on stages goes,” says Susan Lyles, founder and director of the And Toto Too Theater Company, an organization that showcases new works by women playwrights.

Tonight, for the troupe’s fourth annual Play Crawl fundraiser, a roving audience will gather at the Oriental Theater at 6 p.m. for food and a silent auction; from there, they’ll split into groups and trek to eleven venues featuring world-premiere short plays written by some of Denver’s best up-and-coming women playwrights.

“It’s a really wide mix of pieces. Some are light and airy, and others have more depth and emotion to them,” says Lyles. The Disgruntled Book Club, performed at the Book Bar, tells the story of the awkward bibliophiles in the Cat Lovers’ Book Club, whose venue boots the group for being too raucous. Among the other plays are a family drama about two sisters who discover their parents are lying about their births, and a lecture about Cézanne and his use of apples in his paintings.

After the crawl, participants will reunite at the theater, 4335 West 44th Avenue, for live music and mingling. Tickets, $35, are available at andtototoo.org or 720-583-3975.
