In the annals of American film, On the Waterfront is a juggernaut. The Marlon Brando-led classic about corruption and crime in a dock-workers’ union was not just a commercial success; it won eight Academy Awards and was named one of the American Film Institute’s top ten movies of all time. Now, during Landmark’s A Film for All Seasons series, you can see the classic on the big screen.
“It’s a beautiful noir, and it encapsulated that protagonist struggle I was after — the little man against the big machinery, and standing up for yourself despite the consequences, doing the right thing,” says Landmark’s Crystal Vales, who selected the film for the series. “I was intrigued a lot by Marlon Brando and Elia Kazan’s collaborations together. A big part of what makes the film so powerful is that it pioneered American-style Method acting. The emotional power of the film and the very slight nuances that Elia Kazan was so sensitive to — he was such a great director for actors.”
