“Warriors…come out and play!” It is, after all, your anniversary. Thirty-five years ago, Walter Hill’s outlandish take on New York City’s gang violence hit theaters, and now The Warriors is back with a brand-new digital restoration to please fans old and new as part of Alamo Drafthouse Cinema’s Assemble the Team theme month.
“We have a lot of varieties of teams in our Assemble the Team program, but none more vivid and fun than The Warriors, than gangs,” says Keith Garcia, creative manager for the Littleton Alamo. “They’re a little like a baseball team, only more violent.”
Of course, in Hill’s cartoonish take on ’70s New York, one of the gangs is a baseball team of sorts, complete with mime makeup. Then there are the all-female Lizzies, the unappreciated Orphans and the Punks, among others. And, of course, the heroes are simple gang folk themselves — though lacking any easily identifiable shtick — who just want to get home after being framed for the murder of the top gang guy in the city.
