After years of avoiding the spotlight in the aftermath of his hit sketch show, Chappelle’s Show, Dave Chappelle has exploded back on the standup scene and is turning Denver into one of his regular stops. Less reclusive now, Chappelle was just here in May for a week of sold-out shows at Comedy Works, forever endearing himself to the local comedy scene by also dropping in on the free Too Much Fun showcase. It’s remarkable not only that Chappelle chose to return so soon, but also that he chose to celebrate his birthday in Denver.

As it stands, tonight’s Red Rocks show is the only other performance Chappelle has scheduled for 2014, so we shouldn’t take his frequent visits for granted just yet. You never know when he’ll disappear for eight years again.

Though the increasingly muscular Chappelle is set to take the Red Rocks stage at 8 p.m., doors open at 6:30 to give revelers enough time to climb the venue’s windy stairs and secure seats before his first joke. Red Rocks is at 18300 West Alameda Parkway in Morrison; tickets, $55 to $65, can be purchased at redrocksonline.com/concerts-events.

Sun., Aug. 24, 8 p.m., 2014
