Number 50: Hot dog with hot sauce from the Old Fashioned Italian Deli
Hot dogs are awesome. Of all the tube-shaped meat products out there, hot dogs are the king. And right now in Denver, we are living in a hot dog golden age. We have gourmet dogs and street dogs and gourmet street dogs and veggie dogs and plain old dogs just about everywhere.
But even with all this tubular largesse, there will always be one dog that rises above the rest, standing as a kind of Apollonian ideal of tubesteaks. And that is the hot dog with hot sauce and slivered onions at the Old Fashioned Italian Deli. There are so many things that make this the best dog in town–from the Sahlen’s wiener to the Weber horseradish mustard to the hot sauce modeled after the best in Buffalo and the fact that the owners came to Denver (Littleton, really) from Buffalo themselves–that mecca of hot doggery. All of this adds up to a hot dog that is like a benchmark for all other dogs in the city–the best there is today and likely the best there’ll be tomorrow.
