Number 41: Croissant with Asiago and prosciutto from Buffalo Doughboy Bakery

During the morning rush, both during the week and on weekends, this sherbet-hued Victorian house-cum-bakery, 33 East Dakota Avenue, is overcome by the people equivalent of a hive of intoxicated bees, all of them strung out on butter. They elbow their way through the door, jostling for space among the rickety tables and tattered chairs, to ogle the pastry case displaying savory cheese galettes, sweet cherry turnovers, perfect scones, cupcakes and the pièce de résistance–the unassailable croissants, so flaky that if you just barely blow on their golden crusts, the buttery shards will flutter in the air like confetti. They come plain; stuffed with feta and spinach; goat cheese and peppers, or filled with prosciutto and Asiago, the combination of which is the food equivalent to falling in love for the first time.
