With Denver’s “First Ever Denver Pairing Competition” set for this Tuesday, April 7, at Baur’s Ristorante, 1512 Curtis Street, the hype is definitely building, and Avery Brewing Company’s Ted Whitney seems confident.

“I really feel badly for everyone trying to out-pair the Avery team; in many ways it’s just not fair,” he says. “Did you know that there are over 500 polyphenols that give beer its flavor? Wines, sake included, have a paltry 300 flavor compounds. I hope you can join us for the whooping our opponents will certainly receive.”

While Team Avery will pair food with beer, Team Synergy will do sake and Team Baur’s will handle the wine, and Baur’s Matt Jackson isn’t having any of Whitney’s beer boasting. “When you’re using words like polyphenol and compounds with beer, it’s a little over the head of the average consumer,” he says.

“He’s challenging us,” Jackson continues, “and maybe we have a handicap because we don’t get as many flavor compounds. So maybe it’s not exactly fair. Its like a scratch bowler competing against a guy using the bumpers.”
