Shortly after A Tribe Called Quest released its final album, 1998’s Love Movement, the animosity within the group was so prevalent that it would have taken a miracle for the members to talk to each other again. But now, after a couple of solo albums and side projects, Q-Tip, Phife Dawg and Ali Shaheed Muhammad have reunited for a nationwide tour — a small step toward what fans hope will lead to a new album. In the early ’90s, Tribe was part of the hip-hop collective (more like a group of like-minded friends) Native Tongues, which also included De la Soul, Queen Latifah, the Jungle Brothers and Black Sheep. Purveyors of creative and innovative hip-hop, Tribe offered a viable alternative to the G-funk and gangster rap that saturated that era. Although the trio has reconvened for the 2K Sports Bounce tour, it’s uncertain whether the quest will continue. Here’s to hoping.
