Too $hort is an anomaly in the rap world, where only a handful of artists have experienced any sort of career longevity. He’s one of the rare individuals who have fruitfully navigated the shark-infested waters of the music industry, and he’s done it on his own terms, without getting chewed up. Despite often being tagged as a chauvinist, $hort is actually one of the most positive MCs in the game. Along with his obligatory odes to getting it on, the rapper has also been a staunch proponent of self-motivation, and on many of his albums, such as 1990’s Short Dog’s in the House, he’s displayed a level of social consciousness that he’s seldom credited for. Additionally, $hort has largely refrained from using samples in his music, which has allowed him to build a publishing empire with Dangerous Music. With more than a dozen releases under his belt, Too $hort is steady mackin’ and showing a whole new generation of rappers how it’s done.
