Ode to a patio: I think that I shall never see/A patio as lovely when drinking Chablis. Or better yet, tequila. After the miserable winter we’ve endured, I’ve got the worst case of spring fever in the history of the world. While many people get out their Rollerblades, hiking shoes or bikes, I toast the start of the new season by finding a good outdoor bar. And my new favorite drinking patio is at Lola. I don’t know if it’s the smart layout or the cool Highland crowd or the hot margaritas, but this deck reminds me of a beach bar, complete with the laid-back feel that comes with sand and surf. And great margaritas. While the Casarita margarita ($5.50), made with house tequila, triple sec, lime, orange juice and sweet and sour is fine, my favorite Lola marg is the Silver Tres Coins ($8), made with Sauza Tres Generaciones Plata, Patrón Citrónge and lime. With Coin-style margs, you don’t waste calories — or time — and there’s no doubt that you’re drinking tequila and not just mix. I finished my toast to spring with a Black Mexican Martini ($9) that bartender John mixed up from Patrón XO Café, 1921 Tequila Crema and Jameson Irish Whiskey. It tasted like the best Mexican hot chocolate to ever kick my tastebuds; winter would have been a lot more palatable with a few of these. And though Jameson might seem a strange addition to a coffee/tequila cocktail, the whiskey “brings it,” John pointed out. I couldn’t agree more. Next time you’re looking for a patio hangout, bring it to Lola.
