Ondo’s, the tapas bar at 250 Steele Street that opened last fall, recently expanded its hours to include lunch. And the lunch menu — and the lunch menu only — features what owner Curt Steinbecker believes are the only authentic bocadillos in Denver.

Steinbecker describes bocadillos as “Spanish-style, hot baguette sandwiches.” The menu’s got seven of them: three a variation on a pork product (two ham, one pork loin) and cheese theme; another, the “Menoquino” ($7.50), comes with hamburger, caramelized onion and mahon cheese, a cow cheese from the Spanish island of Menorca that Steinbecker says “packs a little more punch.”

The very traditional “Español” ($7) comes on a tortilla made of potatoes and eggs, with a mayo, garlic and olive oil sauce called ali-oli. Another lunch offering, the Madrileno ($7.50), includes ham, havarti, tomato and avocado, served cold. The sandwiches run between $7 and $10, and include potatoes or salad.

There’s another noteworthy, lunch-only deal: bottomless sangria for $10.

$50,000

If you can’t make lunch, which runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Ondo’s happy hour menu features one bocadillo every day, Steinbecker says. That happy hour hour runs from 4 to 7 p.m. and again from 10 p.m.-midnight daily.
