It’s tough to be a vegetarian in the South, and damn near impossible to be vegan (at least if you want to it out). So even though Lucile’s Creole Cafe doesn’t have a huge vegetarian selection (and vegans are pretty much out of luck), the vegetarian options that are on the menu are so amazing that it’s well worth the trip to your closest location — particularly if you can stomach eggs and buttermilk, because the biscuits are to die for.

On Easter Sunday, there was a wait for tables at the Littleton Lucile’s, but parties of two could be accommodated at the scalloped bartop. The bartenders were busy putting together Bloody Marys and mimosas in the middle of the bright, open bar, but they were still attentive and quick to take an order.

Pictured above is the Eggs New Orleans: fried eggplant slices with Creole sauce, poached eggs and Hollandaise. The crispy-on-the-outside, tender-on-the-inside savory eggplant, which had been sliced the perfect width for frying, was topped by the quivering eggs; bright-yellow yolk oozed over the fluffy egg whites for a runny, delicious dish.

It came with one of Lucile’s massive biscuits, which are deservedly popular. Smeared with strawberry-rhubarb preserves, this was a monster of a side. Although it seems a little hypocritical to order a soy latte, Lucile’s carries soy milk, and it made an excellent vegan morning drink.
