From hundred-year-old photographs of Colorado’s early beginnings to political materials from elections gone by, the History Colorado Center has a collection of artifacts that chronicle the state’s past from the perspective of those who lived it. During today’s Behind-the-Scenes Collections Tour and companion one-hour program, visitors will get a chance to peruse these pieces of Colorado’s trailblazing past, tapping the center’s in-person and online archives.
The program will provide tips on how to best utilize the center’s vast database and show real-time searches explaining the best ways to sift through the online archives of more than 80,000 items. “We look for things with a really strong Colorado connection and a story associated with it, because, really, the artifacts and photos are wonderful, but the stories behind them are what is really exciting,” says Elisa Phelps, head of the History Colorado Center’s Collections and Library Division.
Today’s tour and program begin at 1 p.m. at History Colorado, 1200 Broadway. Museum tickets are $4 to $5 and can be purchased in person, at historycolorado.org or by calling 303-866-2394; space is limited, so advance purchase is recommended. The museum will offer similar but smaller tours each Friday at 1 p.m. through May 2015. Check historycolorado.org for details.
