Improv veteran Sarah Kirwin thought the time was ripe for an LGBT troupe in Denver, so she hooked up with fellow improv artists Jon Jon Lannen, Michelle Marlowe, Ashley Scroggins and Chris Parente (the KDVR/KWGN celebrity, who also happens to have trained with Chicago’s Second City) to form the Queerbots Improv Comedy Troupe, with the goal of spreading humor and a gay way of looking at things on local comedy stages. And though they’ve been warming up locally for about six months, the Queerbots consider tonight’s show at Hamburger Mary’s their true debut.
“Denver is a hotbed for GLBT issues right now, and it also has one of the most supportive gay and allied communities in the country,” Kirwin says. “It feels like the right time to launch a queer-focused comedy troupe and poke some fun at ourselves, our societal evolution and our culture.”
The Queerbots will address such issues as same-sex marriage, gay parenthood and lesbian sports via audience suggestions while incorporating random videotaped comments from Hollywood stars. The fun starts at 8 p.m. at Hamburger Mary’s, 700 East 17th Avenue in Uptown; tickets are $10 at the door beginning at 7 p.m. Get more information on the Facebook event page.
