“Denver has a thing for Halloween and a thing for zombies, and it shows every year,” says Danny Newman, founder of the Denver Zombie Crawl. “It’s our ninth year doing it, and it keeps growing.” This year, Newman expects as many as 35,000 ardent fans of the undead to descend upon the 16th Street Mall and turn it into a test run for the inevitable zombie apocalypse, making it one of the largest such events anywhere in the world. “I’m excited and proud to see it grow,” he adds. “Everything’s been very positive, and it’s awesome to be a part of something that’s part of fall in Denver.”
The zombie fun kicks off at 2 p.m. and includes a concert by the Widow’s Bane, a synchronized zombie “Thriller” dance and, of course, tens of thousands of undead swarming the 16th Street Mall. Those who need some assistance getting undead can come at noon for costuming help, and Newman encourages everyone to put their own spin on the zombie menace. “Whatever you want to dress up as, you can be a zombie version of it, which is great,” he says. “It makes it very easy to participate.”
